Dusting things off

Almost 3 years have passed since my last post and I'm feeling myself more and more drawn to somewhere I can hash out all the clutter in my mind. Things have changed around here, kids have grown, I've started working again but ultimately I'm no closer to figuring out who I am and what I'm doing here.

Only time will tell if this ends up being the place where I figure all this out...

Giving up dairy

I realized a few weeks ago that my littlest wasn't handling dairy well and I needed to give it up. Anyone who knows me knows that this was not good news for me! I love dairy! Milk, ice cream, cheese, yogart. Pretty much any form of dairy or anything with dairy in it is a good thing in my book!

I did really well the first week. The last few days I've had a few things that ended up having dairy. Signy is now super fussy and having crazy poops and spit ups again.

So here I am, giving it up for real. Trying to not feel to sorry for myself. Trying to not feel selfish and frustrated that I have to give it up. This is hard.

Support in unexpected places

So Dagny is still breastfeeding. I don't have a problem with it but since I announced I was pregnant, I've been getting a lot of flack about it. I expect support from LLL but pretty much have given up expecting it anywhere else.

Even my husband has given me some grief. Last week we took Dagny in for a well baby visit. While I was out of the room the Dr told Mike that I was just asking to have preterm labor by continuing to nurse. After trying to convince him that it was safe, I finally had to google nursing while pregnant and send him links all stating that in a normal pregnancy nursing is safe.

Last night was our Parents as Teachers visit. It came up that Dagny was still nursing and not sleeping through the night. Jill's response was to ask me how I was doing with being pregnant and nursing and to make sure I was taking care of myself. Jill even told me a story about her experience nursing. Her kids are 18 months apart. A few months after the baby came home her oldest looked at the baby nursing and said "Mommy I would like to eat". Jill's response was OK, he took a few drinks and said "oh yeah, I don't really like this anymore". Its nice to know that there is another time and place where I won't have to cringe when the topic of breastfeeding comes up.

Pregnant

So I'm pregnant.

This wasn't planned.

In some ways this is coming at the worst possible time for us.

After a few days of freaking out and comments by my husband about "failed" pregancy tests. We got over it. It took me until I saw the baby on an early ultrasound to get excited. I had a horrible feeling that since I hadn't really wanted this pregnancy something was going to go wrong. Now that I am starting to show and we are debating on names, the excitement is here.

So now we are trying to figure out what next. How do we afford 2 kids under 2? How do we prepare Dagny for a new sibling? How many more cloth diapers are we going to need with 2 in diapers? Do I want to keep working full time? Can we afford for me to keep working full time? Is there a way to swing me staying home during the day and working at night? Can I get my current employer to agree to a nontraditional work arrangement for a few years so that I don't have to leave there? Do I really want to stay at my current employer even if they agree to a nontraditional work arrangement? Is this the opportunity I have been looking at to get out of insurance and back to school? Is there a way to keep Dagny in daycare part time for the socialization?

Lots of questions, few answers at this point. Lets hope some of them come soon......

Birth Plans

Birth Plans. Seldom does a birth go as planned. Is it even worth it to have a plan? I don't really have the answer but reading Girl's Gone Child today got me thinking about my plan.

I had a plan. Not a written plan, because I'm not that organized, but a plan. Mike and I thoroughly discussed the plan. So thoroughly that he wished many times that I would stop discussing it! I knew that I probably wouldn't be able to advocate for myself in the thick of labor and it was important that he be able to do so.

It went something like this:

No induction.
No drugs.
Freedom to move around during labor - birth ball, rocking chair, tub, shower, just walking around.
Baby on my chest right after birth.
Breastfeed as soon as possible.

One thing was written down. A few years ago I labored with a friend during the birth of her youngest son. This friend had no intention of going drug free but every time the nurses came in the room they asked "ready for drugs?". I knew that if I was doubting my ability to labor without drugs and was asked that, it would make me doubt myself even more. So at my pre-admission visit to the hospital I asked that they write on my chart "do not ask about pain meds, please". No one asked and I made it through with out the meds.

I should say that I made it to the point where they had to stitch me up with out drugs. At that point I needed some drugs! That's a story for another day.

Happy Mother's Day!

Today is my second Mother's day as a mother. It amazes me the changes that a year has brought.

Last year Sweet Pea was almost 4 weeks old. She slept a lot and loved to snuggle with us. She nursed all the time and I hadn't ever left her with anyone else.

This year Sweet Pea is almost 13 months old. She hates to sleep we think she is afraid she will miss something interesting. She only loves to snuggle when she is sleepy or nervous about her surroundings. She only nurses 5-6 times a day and eats "real" food like a champ. She loves daycare and going places with her Papi.

Today we didn't do much. I got to take a nap, always appreciated since Sweet Pea is still not sleeping through the night! Yesterday was our main celebration. We took Sweet Pea to City Market for the first time. She enjoyed watching the people and investigating the booths. We picked up some flowers for the front yard. Then we headed to Christoper Elbow for some amazing chocolate for me.

Then home so I could work in the yard. It was hard work but needed to be done. Last year I completely neglected the spring clean up. The fence line in the back was a disaster! It isn't as bad now but will need another day of work. My friend Dawn removed some tiger lilies and irises from her yard and I planted some in the front bed. I'm not sure that they will survive the transplanting but if they do they will be a welcome addition to my meager plantings.

Happy Mother's day to any mothers reading this.

First Post

My Blog.

I've been talking about starting a blog for at least a year. I am such a procrastinator that I am just finally getting around to starting this.

I hope this will be a place where I can figure out my crazy life, share stories about my amazing daughter, and occasionally share projects I am working on.
